It's KOOL inside

The little penguin with the cocked wing beckoned from the door. Come on in. Its KOOL inside! the sign read. In shades of ice white, Arctic blue and pale green with icicles dangling from every letter, the sign on the door looked refreshing,Most of aftermarket hid Shun Stone Granite Tiles for motorcycle are similar or the same with following one. inviting, enticing. On hot summer afternoons, Mothers would feed lunch to their little ones, lay the babies down for a nap in the coolest room in the house, and prepare for their afternoon tour of downtown. It would be an adventure heretofore unheard of in the rural South.

In the late 1930s, air conditioning had just become available to the masses and savvy retailers of the Deep South were installing window units in their places of businesses. Willis Carriers 1902 invention designed to maintain climate control for a Brooklyn publishing house was making bearable summer months possible for people across the nation.

City Pharmacy in downtown Winder was air conditioned for as long as I can remember. My older brothers can remember the days when the six ceiling fans suspended from the 20-foot ceilings provided the only air movement in the store. In the summer, the fans kept air moving near the floor. When we moved with us the pink marble countertop that once was part of the stores soda fountain, I recalled my parents and brothers talking about the heyday of the social magnet that occupied the front end of the store.

My mother and grandmother made chicken salad and other sandwich fillings at home and brought to the store to serve the lunch crowd. Gene Hopkins went to work at the store when he was just a little squirt not tall enough to reach the sink where he would wash dishes. My father found a Pepsi crate Gene could stand on so he didnt slosh water all over the floor.

A gigantic glass punch bowl perched on the countertop held fresh fruit folks would buy throughout the day. Banana splits were served in glass dishes specially manufactured to suit the purpose. Mother says today she could just bump herself how do you do that? for not saving the banana split dishes when the fountain ceased operation in the early 1950s.Round marble topped iron tables painted white with twisted wrought iron sweetheart chairs were scattered across the black-and-white mosaic tile floor. Hoot Gibson the Georgia power lineman, not the actor would bring in his Chihuahua for an ice cream almost every afternoon.

When Daddy installed the air conditioners, it made chilling the salads and ice cream a lot easier and brought in more people.Because he was at the store working in comfort all day, he had some difficulty relating to the sweltering hot box at home. The Arnold family bought our first air conditioned automobile in 1966 when C.H. bought a red 1967 Mustang convertible. No, the air conditioning was not when you peeled the top back, Smarty Pants. The car had an air conditioner.

The Mustang was soon followed by a 1968 Oldsmobile 98 with air conditioning. With work and transportation environments comfort cooled, it stood to reason that the house would follow. After all, wouldnt you want your family to be comfortable? Not if you want them to work at the drug store. Having the house un-air conditioned was the only way to ensure familial labor.

As my mother frequently reminds us, if she is going to suffer, it will not be in silence. Her suffering through hot summers was quite noisy. So the summer I was a rising senior at Winder-Barrow High School, C.H. caved and had a central heating and air conditioning system installed at home.
The Arnolds now lived in air conditioned bliss for a little while. It was a lunchtime Tuesday when Mother and I left the drug store to go home, take care of a few things and get some black-eyed peas cooked for supper. After lunch, we started back to the store when Mother checked the stove to make sure the peas were turned off.

Six hours later, we could see the blue smoke rolling from under the kitchen door as we drove into the carport. There were no flames the copper-bottomed Revere saucepan saved the day on that score but the smoke had claimed a death grip on everything in the house. It took two weeks of airing, washing, and cleaning before we could turn the air conditioner back on.
